Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum is the visual art exhibition space at Mesa Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona. The MCA showcases curated and juried exhibitions of contemporary art by emerging and internationally recognized artists. Highlighting the finest in contemporary crafts from across the country, Mesa Contemporary Arts Annual Contemporary Crafts exhibition has become a benchmark for innovation and quality.

This year’s show was juried by Luiza deCamargo, Associate Curator at the Society of Arts and Crafts. There are fifty-three pieces by fifty selected artists.

NCECA 2019 Exhibit

Material Impulse: A Confluence of Clay Artists

Robert Siracusa, director of Arizona’s ARC Contemporary Fine Art, will be curating the exhibit Material Impulse: A Confluence of Clay Artists in conjunction with the upcoming 2019 conference National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), Claytopia, to be held in Minneapolis from March 27 - 30, 2019. The show is a survey of contemporary ceramics by Jeff Reich (AZ), Farraday Newsome (AZ), Zach Tate (IN), Novie Trump (AZ), Tom Bartel (OH), Magda Gluszek (AZ), Undine Brod (NY), Ben Roti (AZ), Thaddeus Erdahl (NJ), and Travis Winters (PA), all of whom exhibit at ARC Contemporary Fine Art and nationally.

Mr. Siracusa writes, The timeless art of ceramic sculpture has always been one of deep personal expression. Regardless of whether it is created for necessity or for decorative purposes, the hands of the creator are there, manipulating the material to its end result.

“When I began exhibiting ceramic art in 1997, I was always astonished at the versatility of the material, and moved by the manner with which each artist managed to find something new in every piece and every surface treatment.

The exhibit will be held in Aaron Neumann’s Corner Store Gallery NE, located in the NE Minneapolis Arts District. Mr. Neumann writes, Since the theme of NCECA this year is “Claytopia” which is also driven by a fascination with materials, collaborating with Robert to explore what is going on in the world of clay in the southwest region and beyond was an irresistible opportunity. NCECA 2019 Exhibit:

Mugshot 2 Clay International

The upcoming Mugshot 2 Clay International opens during NCECA 2019 and features mugs from an array of international studios. The show will be held in the Mojo Coffee Gallery, located in the California Building in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. Mojo Coffee Gallery is the project of studio artist Marko Fields. It is a gallery and coffeehouse with hundreds of studio-made cups displayed throughout the space. Mr. Fields juried the show and Mata Ortiz master potter Diego Valles will jury the awards during the opening reception. More about Marko Fields and Diego Valles

These are cups that Farraday Newsome will have in the upcoming Mugshots2 Clay International. They are glazed terra cotta, each approx. 4-5” tall, 2018.

Spring has arrived in the low Sonoran Desert! Among our favorite blooms are the those of the Baja Spurge (Euphorbia xanti), AKA White Spurge. The delicate, pretty flowers appear to hover above their slender, nearly leafless branches. This thornless shrub is native to central and southern Baja California.

Indigo Street Studio Kitchen Garden Note

We love this time of year in the garden! Recent rains and lengthening day length, plus warming soil, make for happy plants. Many of our winter greens are bolting (flowering on rapidly growing, elongated stalks) and will provide seeds to plant next year. Still, there is an abundance of greens that haven’t bolted yet. Our favorite dish right now is vegan pesto made with red and green kales, arugula, walnuts, lemon juice & zest, white miso, and fresh garlic!
